Because if they say, "Yes, we will come out with a new model that's one hundred dollars cheaper!", then no one will buy the ones that are currently out in anticipation. It would be stupid of them to admit to a price drop such as that. You have to think of it from a business perspective. | ||

I don't think that they really expected that to cover anything up. And regarding Penny Arcade's extremely insightful and creative comic, Sony has addressed the "impossible to put both in the controller" issue by stating that they were having difficulties at first, and only recently got it to work right. They didn't completely avoid that, regardless of how bullshit of an excuse it may or may not be. And it's not as if the motion control gimmick wasn't just something to cover their asses, either. They've been thinking about that for a while, as is apparent from the other motion controller stuff they've been messing with and its presence in a controller prototype that the Lair devs were talking about. It is possible that they were genuinely having trouble, but it's unlikely. If they were, then it probably involved trying to think of a way to get around the lawsuit and failing hard at it. And, seeing as how the DualShock 3 isn't going to be released in the US until spring of next year, it's a bit retarded to expect them to start bundling it with the PlayStation 3 this early on. I'm sure that they'll either phase out the SIXAXIS or make it optional when the time comes. Personally, I'd rather that they keep the SIXAXIS as the default controller because I've never given a fuck about rumble, I like light controllers, and the extended battery life is nice.
Also, the comic's artist got the colors wrong on the PlayStation controller's face buttons. =P |

Come November 2nd, people in the US will be getting the $399 PlayStation 3, and, starting immediately, the price of the 80GB model has dropped to $499. The 40GB model will come bundled with Spider-Man 3, as expected. As an added note, Sony has noticed that the US dollar is now on par with the Canadian dollar, and has stopped overcharging Canadians. In effect as of now, a PlayStation 3 from either country will cost the same. |

Basically, here's what happened:
PlayStation 3 launches in North America and Japan, SKUs are as follows: -60GB SKU released (has everything) -20GB SKU released (lacks card readers and Wi-Fi) PlayStation 3 launches in Europe and the rest of the world: -60GB SKU released (lacks emotion engine) Sony pull crazy shit out of their asses: -80GB SKU released (lacks emotion engine, but is bundled with MotorStorm) -60GB SKU gets price drop -20GB SKU discontinued Sony pulls even more crazy shit out of their asses: -80GB SKU gets price drop -60GB SKU discontinued -40GB SKU released (lacks PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility, bundled with Spider-Man 3. Japanese units are available in white.) So, in the end, we've got an 80GB model and a 40GB model. |

Well, they're going to start bundling them with the DualShock 3 rather than the SIXAXIS once production gets ramped up, so I predict that they'll do something interesting involving that.
I doubt that we'll be seeing another price drop for a good while, though. |

Christmas of this year? What they just did was this Holiday's price drop, as far as I can tell. I'm no analyst, but they need to make some profit. Perhaps they'll have a bundle with, say, Ratchet & Clank Future or Uncharted at the regular price for a while, but I don't see a straight drop. | ||

It saves costs, and it helps to promote the purchase of PlayStation 3 software. It is possible to get software emulation in the future. And as for what they were smoking, it seems likely to have been opium.
And, no, I doubt that they'll be nerfing the high-end model much. It's the Goddamn high-end model. |
